Datto BCDR vDisk Restore Support for KVM Hypervisors
At Datto, we focus on understanding and meeting our customers’ needs. Our all-in-one business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solutions — SIRIS and ALTO — are specifically designed with the requirements of managed service providers (MSPs) in mind. Datto BCDR solutions empower MSPs to protect any data and restore it anytime, covering everything from backups to cloud recovery.
Our integrated BCDR stack offers full-spectrum recovery options, from file-level restores to instant virtualization and bare metal recovery. With Datto, MSPs can confidently protect their clients against costly downtime and data loss across servers, virtual machines, cloud applications or any data location.
You asked, we delivered!
In light of the recent shift in the virtualization market, where many partners and customers are seeking alternatives to VMware hypervisors, we are excited to announce a significant update to our BCDR solutions.
We’ve listened to your feedback and are pleased to state that enhanced support for KVM hypervisors with vDisk Restore is now live. This enhancement provides greater flexibility, reduced recovery times and improved control over your recovery processes.
What is a KVM hypervisor?
A Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) is a virtualization module in the Linux kernel that enables it to function as a hypervisor. KVM enables a host machine to run multiple isolated virtual environments called virtual machines (VMs) or guests. Each VM has its own operating system and applications, and it runs on top of the host system’s hardware, sharing resources such as CPU, memory and storage.
Proxmox, SCALE Computing Platform and OpenStack are three different platforms used to manage virtualized environments and infrastructure. They leverage KVM for virtualization but serve different use cases and environments, ranging from enterprise virtualization and hyper-converged infrastructure to large-scale cloud computing.
Proxmox is an open-source virtualization management platform. It integrates with KVM for full virtualization and Linux Containers (LXC) for lightweight containerization. Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) offers a web-based interface for managing VMs, containers, storage, networks and disaster recovery solutions.
The Scale Computing Platform, a strong alternative to VMware, is a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solution designed to simplify IT management. It offers a proprietary operating system (HyperCoreTM) and KVM-based hypervisor for a fully integrated platform that allows you to easily scale your IT environment up or down based on your organization’s capacity and performance needs. By combining storage, servers and virtualization into a single, easy-to-manage system, Scale Computing reduces the complexity and cost of IT infrastructure.
OpenStack is an open-source cloud computing platform for building and managing public and private clouds. It provides a suite of interrelated services for compute, storage, networking and more. OpenStack is ideal for businesses requiring flexible and scalable cloud infrastructure with extensive customization options.
Introducing vDisk restore for KVM hypervisors
Our latest update brings enhanced functionality that our MSP partners have been requesting — vDisk restore support for KVM hypervisors. This feature is designed to offer greater flexibility, speed and efficiency in their disaster recovery processes.
The KVM hypervisor vDisk restore feature elevates the Datto BCDR Export Image function. It now provides native export formats for Linux-based hypervisors, enabling partners to export backup images in the RAW format for quick and easy recovery to KVM hypervisors. This improvement eliminates the need to convert the image, significantly improving recovery time and reducing the need for manual workarounds to convert Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK) and virtual hard disks (VHDs) to RAW format. Additionally, it removes the necessity of using third-party conversion tools, enhancing ease of use.
Overall, this feature streamlines the recovery process, saving time and providing partners with new opportunities to offer unparalleled support for customers with Linux-based virtual environments. This update further strengthens Datto BCDR’s position as a comprehensive and adaptable BCDR solution.
Experience the vDisk restore feature today
We encourage our MSP partners to try out this new feature and experience the improved efficiency and flexibility it brings to your disaster recovery processes.
As we continue to innovate and enhance our BCDR solutions, we remain dedicated to maintaining open lines of communication with our partners. Your insights drive our improvements, and we are committed to delivering solutions that meet the demands of the ever-changing data protection landscape.
